Year 5 2017 - 2018
Welcome to the Year 5 page!
This half term our topic is: 'The Cycle of Life.' We will focus on life cycles in Science and we will be learning about human journeys through studying 'The Arrival'.
In Literacy during this term, we will base our writing and reading around:
- 'The Arrival' which will inspire our writing of balanced arguments and explanation texts.
In Mathematics this term, we will base our learning around:
- Multiplication and Division- formal written methods
- Decimals and percentages
Timestables remain a key skill in Y5 as they provide the foundation for many other areas of learning in mathematics. Children should know and revise multiplication and division facts up to 12 X 12. We will have a timestables challenge in class each week.
These online games can be played to revise/ learn times tables and to develop your child's skills in other areas of maths:
In Science this term, we will base our learning around:
- Life cycles of a variety of animals
- Classifying living things
All children will be read with each week with some children receiving additional reading support. A guided reading book is used for 'group reads' and remains in class. Children are encouraged to borrow books from their classroom library to enjoy at home. Reading journals are for children, parents and staff to respond to the child's reading. This needs to go home and to be brought back into school each day please. We would encourage you to read regularly with your child and put a comment in their reading record at least once a week, ensuring you are focusing on the comprehension of the text.
Homework will be issued on a Friday and must be returned, completed, by the following Wednesday. One English absed task and one Maths based task should be completed from the Homework Grid each week. Spellings are given on a Monday and should be learnt for the spelling test on the following Monday. If your child requires any assistance with their homework then he/she can attend 'Homework Club' on a Wednesday lunch time with Mrs Hill.
PE will be on a Wednesday and Thursday this term. On a Wednesday, Year 5 will be going swimming. Please ensure that all children have their PE kits in on that day with suitable clothing for inside or outside.
We have had a fantastic start to Year 5 and have achieved so much already. We are looking forward to all this next term holds and to working with the children to achieve the very best.
