Year 6 2023-2024
Hello and welcome to Year 6!
Year 6 is the final year for our children at Overleigh St Mary's Primary School. It is always a busy year as we prepare for the end of Key Stage SATs and the transition to high school.
Miss Jones will be teaching Oliver Jeffers Class.
Mrs Dickson and Mrs McGoldrick will be teaching Malorie Blackman Class.
Here you will find all relevant news and curriculum information for the term ahead.
In the files, you will find the topic web with information for what will be taught in Year 6 throughout the year.
We hope your children have a fantastic year and enjoy being top of the school!
Reading
Reading is a top priority in Year 6. Your child will have daily Shared Reading lessons to develop their reading. They will also have the opportunity to independently read, pair read and read to an adult throughout the week.
We will also have spelling lessons every week and will focus on the Year 5 and common exception word list. These are the words that children will need to learn to read and spell by the end of the year. You do not need to learn them all at once - focus on approximately 5 per week and constantly go back and revisit to ensure they are retained in your child's long-term memory.
Rainbow Reading Challenge
To encourage children to read for pleasure at home, the children are invited to take part in our whole-school reading reward challenge. Children will receive stamps on bookmark cards based on how many books they have read at home. This does not include their school phonics reading book but instead books of choice.
Children will receive 1 stamp per book or 2 stamps if they choose to read a book from the recommended reading list of books for Year 6.
Bookmark cards will be stamped by your child’s class teacher once an adult at home has confirmed the book has been completed. Just a signature in your child’s reading diary is all that’s needed.
Each time your child fills a bookmark card they will receive a colour badge in our class celebration assembly with the aim of collecting all the colour badges of the rainbow. Once the whole rainbow reader challenge has been achieved for the new academic year, your child’s name will be entered into a raffle for a prize.
10 stamps = red badge 50 stamps = blue badge
20 stamps = orange badge 60 stamps = indigo badge
30 stamps = yellow badge 70 stamps = violet badge
40 stamps = green badge
Maths
Maths objectives will be linked to White Rose using the Power Maths scheme as a supplement. We will focus and use various concrete, pictorial and written methods to consolidate your child’s understanding and recognise the relationship between each operation. There will also be a focus on Mental Arithmetic throughout the year to help prepare them for their end of year SATs.
Each child will have a login for Times Table Rockstars Times Tables Rock Stars – Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com) please ensure children regulary log-in and practice their times tables. We will be playing it lots in class to help the children develop their understanding of the different times tables.
Homework
Homework will be set on Seesaw and will be available on a Friday. Children will be set English and Maths homework. Where possible, the homework set will link to the area of learning we have covered in class that week. Once completed a picture can be uploaded onto Seesaw for marking or you can write directly onto the page. If your child has any problems with the homework set, please let us know and we can go through it with them at school. If a paper copy is needed, then please ask the class teacher.
